Brown only major Government figure to duck Iraq Inquiry - Davey

12.30.00pm GMT Tue 19th Jan 2010

Commenting on the announcement that Tony Blair will appear before the Iraq Inquiry on 29 January, with then-Foreign and Defence Secretaries Jack Straw and Geoff Hoon set to appear later this week, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Edward Davey said:

"Gordon Brown is now the only major Government player missing from the line-up at the Iraq Inquiry before the election.

"By the time the UK chooses its next Government, we will have heard from the men primarily responsible for Britain's decision to commit troops, but not the man who signed the cheques.

"As we have heard, Brown was a key figure in Blair's inner circle ahead of the invasion. It is absurd that voters are being denied the chance to hear him account for his actions before being asked to re-elect him."
